Tailings Water vs Process Water Storage: Why the Distinction Matters for Tank Design

Tailings water and process water are often discussed as if they are interchangeable, but the design implications for storage infrastructure handling each are genuinely different.

On a mine site, "tailings water" and "process water" sometimes get used loosely as though they describe the same thing at different stages of the same circuit. In storage terms they are not the same problem, and specifying a tank for one as though it were the other is a common source of premature failure.

Process water is generally the cleaner, lower-solids water circulating within the plant - reclaimed from various stages of processing and recirculated for reuse. Tailings water is water that has been in direct contact with tailings solids, carrying a meaningfully higher suspended solids load and, depending on the process, residual reagent chemistry that process water circuits are designed to have already removed.

Solids content changes the whole design brief. A tank designed for clarified process water and a tank designed to handle tailings water carrying suspended solids need different agitation, drainage and abrasion-resistance provisions.
Where the design implications diverge

Solids settling and drainage design

A tank holding water with meaningful suspended solids needs a floor design and drainage arrangement that accounts for settling - a sloped floor toward a drain point, or provision for periodic desludging - that a clean process water tank generally does not need to the same degree. Specifying a flat-floor tank for a tailings water application is one of the more common design mismatches on sites where the distinction has not been made clearly at the brief stage.

Abrasion allowance in coating and wall thickness

Suspended solids in tailings water create ongoing abrasive wear at the tank floor and lower shell, particularly if the tank uses any form of agitation or has significant flow-through. Coating systems and, in some cases, wall thickness allowances need to account for this abrasion, which is a different design driver to the chemical corrosion resistance a process water tank coating is primarily selected for.

Chemistry and containment considerations

Residual reagent chemistry in tailings streams

Depending on the process, tailings water can carry residual flotation reagents, pH modifiers or other process chemicals at levels that affect both material compatibility and environmental containment requirements. This is a specific input to material selection that needs the actual process chemistry data, not a generic mining-water assumption.

Environmental containment obligations often differ

Tailings water storage is frequently subject to different environmental licence conditions to process water storage, given its direct contact with tailings material - which can mean different requirements for liner integrity, freeboard, and monitoring than apply to a process water tank on the same site.

Calling something tailings water or process water is a starting point, not a specification - the actual solids content and chemistry of the stream should drive the tank design, not the label alone.

Can the same tank design be used for both tailings water and process water?

Not usually without modification. The solids content and chemistry differences between the two streams typically require different floor, drainage and coating specifications.
